Proto-Celts originated some where near modern
Ukraine. Real Celts ruled
or terrorized most of Europe by the second century BC. In the Classical
to Medieval Periods the Celts were driven to the fringe areas that
eventually became Galatia, Brittany, the Isle of Man, Cornwall, Wales,
Ireland, and Scotland. In the Colonial Period Celtic-descendants
emigrated to places like the West Indies and America. We are influenced
by the music in all of these Celtic hang outs.
Like most
modern garage-bands we play a number of “standard”
songs, it is just
that our “standards” mostly date to pre-1900 AD.
When performing at
Renaissance Festivals we try to stick to songs that date before 1700
AD. We have smaller sets of songs that date to the American
Revolutionary and Civil War Eras. We have larger sets of songs that
cover
early American hymns and kid songs.
During shows we will
sometimes give audience members the chance to chose from a
“menu” of
“fast songs, slow songs, silly songs, war songs, pretty
songs, drinking
songs and sea songs.”
